Geneva is a cosmopolitan French-speaking city at the southwestern tip of Lake Geneva, framed by the Alps and the Jura. Known for the Jet d'Eau, a compact medieval Old Town, Calvin's Reformation, the Red Cross and the United Nations, it is also a world capital of watchmaking, banking and science with CERN on its doorstep. Despite its high prices, Geneva rewards visitors with lake swimming, museums, fondue and easy day trips to France and the Alps.
- Public
- Excellent: TPG trams, buses and trolleybuses, Mouettes lake boats and SBB/Léman Express trains share one Unireso ticket system, and hotel and hostel guests receive a free Geneva Transport Card.
- Taxi
- Plentiful but expensive (CHF 7 base fare plus about CHF 3.50 per km, so a 10-minute ride costs CHF 25-35 / ~$31-44); Uber also operates.
- Rental
- Rarely needed in the city, where parking is scarce and costly; useful only for the Jura, the Alps and French countryside.
- Walking
- The Old Town, the lakefront and Pâquis are compact and walkable; hills around Bourg-de-Four are gentle.

Transport tips
Travel smarter, not harder.
Ask for the free Geneva Transport Card when checking in at any Geneva hotel, hostel or campsite; it gives free travel on TPG, Mouettes and trains in Zone 10 (the airport is included) for the whole stay.
Buy single tickets in the TPG app or from the red-and-white machines at stops; a single ticket for 60 minutes in Zone 10 costs CHF 3.00 (~$3.75) and a day pass CHF 10 (~$12.50).
Validate paper tickets before boarding where marked; ticket inspectors issue CHF 100 (~$125) fines on the spot for travelling without a valid ticket.
Take the train from Geneva Airport to Cornavin (6-7 minutes); pick up the free 80-minute ticket from the machine in baggage reclaim or the arrivals hall.
Plan around the Léman Express (S-Bahn) for Annemasse, Evian, Coppet and Nyon; the Geneva Transport Card does not cover journeys into France.
Check bise wind warnings before boarding the Mouettes or CGN steamer; services can be suspended in strong wind.
Use sbb.ch to compare saver fares to Zurich, Bern, Lausanne and Paris; seats on TGV Lyria must be reserved.
Carry a passport or EU ID for trips to France, even for short hops to Annemasse or Chamonix; there are occasional border checks.
Download the TPG and SBB Mobile apps and save the transport map offline before leaving the hotel Wi-Fi.
