Geneva Travel Budget 2026

Plan your Geneva trip budget with our comprehensive cost breakdown.

Geneva is a cosmopolitan French-speaking city at the southwestern tip of Lake Geneva, framed by the Alps and the Jura. Known for the Jet d'Eau, a compact medieval Old Town, Calvin's Reformation, the Red Cross and the United Nations, it is also a world capital of watchmaking, banking and science with CERN on its doorstep. Despite its high prices, Geneva rewards visitors with lake swimming, museums, fondue and easy day trips to France and the Alps.

Local currency: Swiss franc (CHF).

Money-saving tips

Practical ways to stretch your budget further.

Save

Ask the hotel or hostel for the free Geneva Transport Card at check-in; it covers trams, buses, Mouettes boats and trains within Zone 10 (including the airport) for the whole stay, worth about CHF 10 (~$12.50) per day.

Save

Buy lunch and picnic food at Migros (for example the branch on Rue du Mont-Blanc, near Cornavin) or Coop; a prepared meal costs CHF 8-14 (~$10-18) against CHF 30+ (~$38+) in a restaurant.

Save

Eat the main meal at lunch: many restaurants serve a plat du jour for CHF 20-28 (~$25-35) at midday and charge much more at night.

Save

Drink the tap water, which is excellent; a bottle of mineral water in a restaurant costs CHF 6-9 (~$8-11). Refill at the public fountains.

Save

Skip hotel minibars and room service; a supermarket drink costs a quarter of the price.

Save

Use the Plainpalais flea market (Wednesday and Saturday) and Carouge market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings) for cheap fresh food and cheese.

Save

Visit the free permanent collections of the Musée d'art et d'histoire (Rue Charles-Galland 2) and the Muséum d'histoire naturelle (Route de Malagnou 1).

Save

Book SBB tickets early on sbb.ch; Supersaver fares to Zurich, Bern or Paris can be 30-50% below full price when bought weeks ahead.
