Home to the federal capital of Switzerland, picturesque alpine lakes, and world-class ski resorts, Bern blends political significance with breathtaking natural beauty.

Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Bern.

1

Münsterplattform (Cathedral Platform)

📸 sunrise or sunseturban panorama

The elevated terrace behind the Bern Minster is the finest viewpoint in the city, offering a sweeping panorama of the UNESCO Old Town rooftops, the Aare River bend, and the Bernese Alps beyond. The view is exceptional at both golden hour and during winter snowfall.

Photo tip: In summer, sunrise comes early (around 06:00)—arrive at 05:45 for an empty platform and pink alpenglow on the peaks
2

Rose Garden (Rosengarten) Viewpoint

📸 golden hour (evening)urban panorama

Bern's Rose Garden hill provides a classic elevated view across the Aare River bend and the entire Old Town with the cathedral spire rising above the medieval roofscape. The foreground of rose bushes in bloom (May-September) makes it even more distinctive.

Photo tip: The best light falls on the Old Town in late afternoon when the sandstone buildings glow golden. The May rose bloom creates a perfect foreground.
3

Nydeggbrücke Bridge

📸 morningarchitecture/river

The view from Nydeggbrücke looking west shows the Untertorbrücke (Bern's oldest bridge) in the foreground, the Aare River, the Bear Park, and the cathedral above. Looking east, you see the river emerging from the wooded Aare gorge.

Photo tip: Morning mist often rises from the Aare in autumn—arrive early for atmospheric moody shots of the bridge and river
4

Zytglogge Clock Tower (Kramgasse perspective)

📸 morningarchitecture

The view down Kramgasse toward the Zytglogge tower is Bern's most iconic streetscape—the colonnaded arcades framing the medieval tower at the end of the perfectly straight street. Early morning light from the east illuminates the tower face beautifully.

Photo tip: The Zytglogge face catches the best light between 08:00-10:00 in summer; include a figure or two under the arcades for scale and life
5

Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe)

📸 morning (before 11:00)alpine/glacier

The Great Aletsch Glacier stretching south from the Jungfraujoch saddle is one of the most spectacular photographic subjects in the Alps. The stark white glacier, ice tunnels, and surrounding 4,000m peaks offer extraordinary subjects for landscape photography.

Photo tip: Clear skies are most common before 11:00; cloud often builds by early afternoon. Ask station staff about current conditions before ascending.
6

Grindelwald First Cliff Walk

📸 morningalpine/landscape

The glass-floored Cliff Walk extension at Grindelwald First offers a vertigo-inducing perspective overlooking the valley 2,000m below, with the Eiger north face directly opposite. The mountain panorama is extraordinary in clear morning light.

Photo tip: Combine with the First Flyer zipline for action shots, or hike to Bachalpsee for the classic Eiger reflection photograph
7

Bachalpsee Lake Reflection (Grindelwald)

📸 early morning (before 09:00)landscape/reflection

The small alpine lake of Bachalpsee at 2,265m provides one of the Swiss Alps' most celebrated reflection photographs—the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn reflected in perfectly calm water, reached in 1 hour from the Grindelwald First gondola.

Photo tip: The lake surface is calmest at dawn before wind develops. Bring a graduated ND filter for the dynamic range between sky and water.
8

Lauterbrunnen Valley

📸 midday (for waterfalls)landscape/waterfall

The U-shaped Lauterbrunnen Valley with its 72 waterfalls cascading from sheer 300m cliffs is one of the most dramatic natural settings in Europe. The Staubbachfall plunges freely 300m directly into the valley, particularly dramatic in spring snowmelt.

Photo tip: Midday light falls into the deep valley best; spring (May-June) has maximum waterfall flow. Include a Swiss chalet in the foreground for scale.
9

Oeschinensee Alpine Lake

📸 early morninglandscape/lake

The emerald-green Oeschinensee near Kandersteg, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, provides extraordinary reflection photographs in calm early morning conditions. The UNESCO designation speaks to its exceptional natural beauty.

Photo tip: Rent a rowing boat for unique on-water perspectives; the eastern shore has the best cliff reflection angle at dawn
10

Aare River from Below Old Town

📸 eveningarchitecture/river

Walking the riverside path below the Old Town cliff gives an entirely different perspective on Bern—the cathedral and medieval walls rise dramatically above the river, especially impressive when illuminated at night. The path is accessible from Marzili or Dalmazikade.

Photo tip: Blue hour (30 minutes after sunset) is the best time—the city lights glow warmly against a deep blue sky and the Minster is floodlit
