Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Bern.
The Canton of Bern is Switzerland's second-largest canton, stretching from the UNESCO-listed medieval capital city to the dramatic peaks of the Bernese Oberland. Home to the federal capital of Switzerland, picturesque alpine lakes, and world-class ski resorts, Bern blends political significance with breathtaking natural beauty.
Top 10 Photo Spots
The most photogenic locations in Bern.
Münsterplattform (Cathedral Platform)
The elevated terrace behind the Bern Minster is the finest viewpoint in the city, offering a sweeping panorama of the UNESCO Old Town rooftops, the Aare River bend, and the Bernese Alps beyond. The view is exceptional at both golden hour and during winter snowfall.
Rose Garden (Rosengarten) Viewpoint
Bern's Rose Garden hill provides a classic elevated view across the Aare River bend and the entire Old Town with the cathedral spire rising above the medieval roofscape. The foreground of rose bushes in bloom (May-September) makes it even more distinctive.
Nydeggbrücke Bridge
The view from Nydeggbrücke looking west shows the Untertorbrücke (Bern's oldest bridge) in the foreground, the Aare River, the Bear Park, and the cathedral above. Looking east, you see the river emerging from the wooded Aare gorge.
Zytglogge Clock Tower (Kramgasse perspective)
The view down Kramgasse toward the Zytglogge tower is Bern's most iconic streetscape—the colonnaded arcades framing the medieval tower at the end of the perfectly straight street. Early morning light from the east illuminates the tower face beautifully.
Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe)
The Great Aletsch Glacier stretching south from the Jungfraujoch saddle is one of the most spectacular photographic subjects in the Alps. The stark white glacier, ice tunnels, and surrounding 4,000m peaks offer extraordinary subjects for landscape photography.
Grindelwald First Cliff Walk
The glass-floored Cliff Walk extension at Grindelwald First offers a vertigo-inducing perspective overlooking the valley 2,000m below, with the Eiger north face directly opposite. The mountain panorama is extraordinary in clear morning light.
Bachalpsee Lake Reflection (Grindelwald)
The small alpine lake of Bachalpsee at 2,265m provides one of the Swiss Alps' most celebrated reflection photographs—the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn reflected in perfectly calm water, reached in 1 hour from the Grindelwald First gondola.
Lauterbrunnen Valley
The U-shaped Lauterbrunnen Valley with its 72 waterfalls cascading from sheer 300m cliffs is one of the most dramatic natural settings in Europe. The Staubbachfall plunges freely 300m directly into the valley, particularly dramatic in spring snowmelt.
Oeschinensee Alpine Lake
The emerald-green Oeschinensee near Kandersteg, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, provides extraordinary reflection photographs in calm early morning conditions. The UNESCO designation speaks to its exceptional natural beauty.
Aare River from Below Old Town
Walking the riverside path below the Old Town cliff gives an entirely different perspective on Bern—the cathedral and medieval walls rise dramatically above the river, especially impressive when illuminated at night. The path is accessible from Marzili or Dalmazikade.

Bern's sandstone buildings glow a warm honey-gold in the late afternoon light—plan your Old Town walk for 16:00-20:00
Alpine weather determines mountain photography—check MeteoSwiss and Jungfrau webcams the evening before
The Aare River valley creates its own micro-climate with morning mist in autumn that is extraordinarily photogenic
Swiss authorities protect certain sensitive locations—federal buildings and military areas may have photography restrictions
A polarising filter is essential for lake photography—it cuts reflective glare and enhances the vivid turquoise of Brienz and Thun
For glacier photography at Jungfraujoch, use a UV filter to reduce haze from ice crystal glare
Drone photography requires a permit in many areas of Bern Canton; check FOCA regulations before flying
