November is grey, wet, and cold with reduced daylight; January and February bring the coldest temperatures and many tourist facilities in the Bernese Oberland at capacity with ski visitors while city attractions are quiet but limited.

Climate Overview

Bern city has a temperate continental climate with warm summers (average 25°C July), cold winters (average 3°C January), and precipitation spread fairly evenly throughout the year. The Bernese Oberland experiences an alpine climate with dramatically different conditions by altitude—the Jungfraujoch remains near -7°C year-round. Bern city receives around 1,000mm of rain annually, with thunderstorms common in summer.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

Bern's spring is beautiful with cherry blossoms, tulips in the Rose Garden, and the Alps still snow-capped. Temperatures rise from 8°C in March to 18°C in May. Rain is common but days lengthen quickly.

Tips: Pack waterproofs and layers; book Easter and May bank holiday accommodation well ahead; Bern carnival (Fasnacht) takes place in February/March

Jun-Aug

Warm and sunny with occasional afternoon thunderstorms. Bern city reaches 26-28°C in July-August. Mountain areas are dramatically cooler—the Jungfraujoch is always around -7°C. Peak tourist season with maximum crowds and prices.

Tips: Book accommodation and Jungfraujoch tickets months in advance; UV protection essential at altitude; Aare river swimming is at its best; Gurtenfestival (July) is unmissable

Sep-Nov

Autumn is Bern's most underrated season—golden foliage, lower crowds, crisp air, and excellent visibility for mountain views. Temperatures drop from 20°C in September to 8°C in November. The famous Zibelemärit (Onion Market) takes place in late November.

Tips: Perfect for hiking before mountain trails close for winter; best photography conditions; bear watching in the park as bears prepare for winter

Dec-Feb

Bern city sees cold, grey winters with occasional snow and temperatures between -1°C and 5°C. The Bernese Oberland ski resorts at Grindelwald, Mürren, and Adelboden open in December. Christmas markets in Bern are magical.
