Danpaati River Lodge

Danpaati River Lodge sits deep in the Surinamese interior on the banks of the Upper Suriname River in Brokopondo District, accessible only by motorised longboat from the road-end town of Atjoni — a transfer of approximately one to two hours upriver depending on water levels and season. The lodge occupies a stretch of primary tropical rainforest within the traditional territory of the Saramaka Maroon people, one of the communities descended from escaped enslaved Africans who established autonomous forest societies in Suriname's interior over the 17th and 18th centuries. The surrounding forest is part of the Guiana Shield, one of the planet's oldest and most biodiverse geological formations, harbouring jaguar, tapir, giant river otter, eight-banded armadillo, and hundreds of bird species including harpy eagle and scarlet macaw.

The lodge is composed of elevated wooden pavilion cabins positioned above the riverbank and forest floor, constructed to maximise natural ventilation and integrate with the landscape. Interiors are more comfortable than a remote location might suggest: proper beds with mosquito netting, en-suite bathrooms, ceiling fans, and shaded verandas overlooking the river. Design elements draw on Maroon craft traditions, with carved wooden details and woven fibre elements incorporated throughout the property.

All-inclusive packages cover accommodation, three meals per day, guided jungle hikes, canoe excursions, nocturnal wildlife walks, and visits to Saramaka villages where guests observe traditional wood carving, textile traditions, and oral history. Food quality at the lodge is a consistent guest highlight — menus combine Surinamese staples with more careful preparations, and dietary requirements can generally be accommodated with advance notice.
