Mercat de Colón Breakfast Bar

The Mercado de Colón is one of Valencia's finest works of Art Nouveau architecture, a grand iron-and-glass market hall on Carrer de Jorge Juan in the affluent Eixample district, completed in 1916. Long converted from its original food market function, the building now houses a cluster of upscale cafés, breakfast bars, and food stalls beneath its soaring vaulted ceiling and ornate tiled arches. Having breakfast or morning coffee in the Mercado de Colón is a refined Valencia ritual — particularly on a weekend, when the city's well-heeled Eixample residents fill the terrace tables and the interior bars with café con leche, freshly squeezed orange juice, and pan tumaca (toast rubbed with tomato and olive oil). Several independent operators trade within the market, each with a slightly different offer: some lean toward pastries and traditional Spanish breakfast, others toward contemporary brunch. The common denominator is the architectural setting, which transforms what might otherwise be an ordinary coffee stop into something memorable. The building is also surrounded by a pleasant terrace that extends onto the pavement, popular in warmer months. The market is open daily from early morning through midnight, accommodating everything from morning coffee to evening cocktails. No reservation is required for breakfast or brunch.
