Oceanogràfic

Oceanogràfic is Europe's largest aquarium, located within the City of Arts and Sciences complex in Valencia, Spain. Designed by architect Félix Candela and completed in 2002, the aquarium's iconic structures — a series of shell-shaped pavilions surrounded by ornamental pools and walkways — are themselves architectural landmarks before visitors even enter the water displays. The complex covers 110,000 square metres and houses nearly 45,000 specimens representing approximately 500 species from 10 distinct marine ecosystems: the Mediterranean, the Tropical Ocean, Arctic and Antarctic, the Temperate Sea, the Red Sea, the Coral Sea, the open Oceans, the Islands, freshwater ecosystems, and a marine wetlands zone. The centrepiece is a vast underwater tunnel in the Oceans pavilion, where a moving walkway carries visitors through a transparent acrylic corridor with sharks, rays, and large pelagic fish swimming overhead and on all sides. The dolphinarium stages educational shows with Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in a 24,000-square-metre outdoor lagoon, while the Arctic and Antarctic zone houses beluga whales and a colony of penguins in climate-controlled enclosures. The Red Sea pavilion recreates tropical reef ecosystems with vivid coral and diverse reef fish. On the upper level, walruses and sea lions occupy outdoor rockpools with regular keeper talks throughout the day. A full visit takes 3–5 hours and is best started in the morning so the dolphin shows — which run at fixed times — can be incorporated. Oceanogràfic also operates a sea turtle and marine mammal rescue hospital. Combining the aquarium with the adjacent Museu de les Ciències using a combined ticket provides excellent value for a full day at the City of Arts and Sciences.
