L'Umbracle

L'Umbracle is an elevated promenade and garden walkway forming part of Valencia's City of Arts and Sciences complex, running along the rooftop of the complex's multi-storey car park on Avenida del Professor López Piñero. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2001, it functions as a covered outdoor garden featuring over 60 species of native Valencian flora — including olive trees, orange trees, lavender, rosemary, and the region's symbolic orange blossom — arranged along a central walkway beneath a dramatic white framework of arched steel and concrete ribs. The structure is open on its long sides to allow natural ventilation, creating a cool shaded promenade even on hot summer days, which makes it a pleasant refuge for visitors between paid attractions. Interspersed along the walkway are a series of monumental contemporary sculptures by Spanish and international artists, creating an open-air gallery within a botanical setting. The elevated position of L'Umbracle provides outstanding elevated views across the entire City of Arts and Sciences complex: the Hemisfèric, Museu de les Ciències, Oceanogràfic, and Palau de les Arts are all visible from different points along the promenade's approximately 320-metre length. At the southern end, an open terrace provides one of the best photography vantage points in the complex, particularly at sunset when the last light catches the white facades and ripples across the pools below. L'Umbracle is free to enter and open 24 hours a day, making it the most accessible part of the complex for visitors on any budget. On summer and autumn weekend evenings, the L'Umbracle Terrace operates as a popular open-air bar with views over the illuminated complex. A relaxed walk through the full promenade takes 20–30 minutes.
