The Hemisfèric is one of the six structures making up Valencia's City of Arts and Sciences complex, and one of its most immediately striking from the outside. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and opened in 1998, the building takes the form of a giant eye: a concave white concrete bowl, the 'iris', reflects in a long shallow pool, while a curved ribbed roof that can open and close like an eyelid frames the structure. The interior houses an IMAX cinema, a digital planetarium, and a laserium, with a hemispherical screen measuring 900 square metres — one of the largest projection surfaces in Spain.
