Albufera Natural Park

Albufera Natural Park is a protected freshwater lagoon and wetland located approximately 10 kilometres south of Valencia city in the Valencia region of Spain. Covering around 21,000 hectares, it is one of the most important wetland habitats in the western Mediterranean, hosting over 250 bird species including herons, egrets, flamingos, spoonbills, and the globally threatened ferruginous duck. The park is dominated by the Albufera lagoon, a large shallow freshwater lake once open to the sea and now separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow strip of coastal land called La Devesa. This dune and pine forest strip offers walking and cycling routes as well as access to uncrowded beach sections. Surrounding the lagoon are vast rice paddies cultivated continuously since the Moorish period, producing the short-grain rice varieties used in authentic Valencian paella. The sight of flooded paddies in spring, vivid green shoots in summer, and golden harvested fields in October is genuinely spectacular from the dyke paths that cross the park. Traditional flat-bottomed wooden boats (barques) navigate the lagoon's network of channels; short guided boat tours depart from the village of El Palmar and from Catarroja and Sueca. Sunsets over the Albufera lagoon are among the most photographed in the Valencia region, when the still water mirrors deep oranges and reds. El Palmar village at the lake's edge is the historic home of authentic Valencian paella, prepared with local rice, freshwater eels, and poultry over wood fires in traditional large pans. Several village restaurants maintain this tradition and are popular for Saturday and Sunday lunch. Birdwatching is best from the observation hides on the eastern and northern shores of the lagoon.
