Bar La Muralla

Bar La Muralla is a no-frills neighbourhood bar on Calle del Pilar in central Cartagena, open from early morning to midnight every day of the week. The bar takes its name from the Roman wall fragments visible in the adjacent streets of the old town — a reminder that Cartagena's urban core is built on layers of Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, and Moorish occupation. The offer at La Muralla is the classic Spanish working bar: strong coffee and a tostada at breakfast, a short selection of bocadillos and raciones at lunchtime, and simple tapas and drinks through the evening. The bocadillo de jamón serrano — good crusty bread filled with cured ham, prepared to order with olive oil and fresh tomato on request — is the bar's most popular daytime order. The plato de mariscos mixto (mixed shellfish plate) brings together whatever is freshest from the morning market: boiled prawns, cured mussels, pickled cockles, and occasionally coquinas (wedge clams). The bar is popular with local construction workers, shopkeepers, and retired residents of the neighbourhood; it is the kind of place that appears in every Spanish city but is becoming harder to find in increasingly touristic old-town areas. Prices are among the lowest in Cartagena's historic centre. There is no formal printed menu; the day's available dishes are communicated verbally by staff. The informal approach extends to the service style — quick, efficient, and practical, with little ceremony.
