Alicante City — Costa Blanca Gateway

Alicante (Alacant in Valencian), 80 kilometres northeast of Murcia city across the Vinalopó Valley, is Murcia's most urban day-trip option — a provincial capital of around 330,000 people with a commanding castle, a celebrated palm-lined promenade, and a beach within walking distance of the historic centre. The Metrotrén FGV service from Murcia's Intermodalidad station runs to Alicante Luceros in approximately 1 hour 30 minutes (around €5.80 one-way); by car via the AP-7 toll motorway the journey takes around one hour (tolls approximately €5–6 each way). The Castillo de Santa Bárbara is the defining landmark. It occupies the rocky Monte Benacantil above the seafront and is reached via a free elevator cut through the rock face from the beach side, or by road. The views over the Costa Blanca and the old city are exceptional; the castle complex also houses a permanent collection of 20th-century Spanish art. Entry is free. Below the castle, the Barrio de Santa Cruz — the medieval quarter — descends through whitewashed lanes with terracotta pots and flower-draped balconies. The Explanada de España, one of Spain's most celebrated waterfront promenades, runs along the seafront between the city centre and the port, paved with an undulating marble mosaic of 6.6 million pieces. The MARQ Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante) on the Plaza Doctor Gómez Ulla holds one of Spain's best regional archaeology collections, covering Iberian, Roman, and Moorish periods (€3 entry, closed Mondays). El Postiguet beach, steps from the Explanada, is clean and well-serviced for an afternoon swim. Lunch options include fresh seafood at restaurants along the Muelle de Levante port area, where caldero-style rice dishes and grilled fish dominate the menus at €12–18 per main.
