Playa de Portús

Playa de Portús — also known as Cala Portús — is a small naturist cove on the Mediterranean coast of Cartagena municipality, approximately 55 km southeast of Murcia city. The cala is set into a rugged section of coastline in the Sierra Minera hills south of Cartagena, accessible only by a narrow winding road from the main coastal highway. This relative inaccessibility has preserved its natural character and contributed to its long-standing reputation as one of Murcia's most secluded beaches.

The cove is small, roughly 100 metres wide, with a mix of fine sand and pebbles framed on both sides by rocky cliffs that descend steeply to the waterline. The water is exceptionally clear — among the clearest on the Costa Cálida — with vivid blue and green tones and excellent visibility to the rocky sea floor. The orientation of the cove provides some shelter but the beach can be exposed to summer easterly winds (levante) that occasionally arrive from the open sea. Wave action is generally mild during the main summer months.

Cala Portús has operated as a clothing-optional naturist beach for decades. Both naturist and clothed visitors use the cove, and the atmosphere is relaxed and tolerant. A small bar and restaurant operate during the summer season, serving drinks and simple meals. Parking is limited and located at the top of the access road, from which a steep, uneven path descends to the waterline in approximately 10 minutes.

There is no public transport to the cala; a private vehicle is essential. The nearest full services are in Cartagena, approximately 30 km by road. Snorkelling around the rocky edges of the cove is rewarding given the exceptional water clarity, and the cove sees significantly fewer visitors than more accessible Murcia beaches, particularly outside the peak July–August period. The combination of clear water, dramatic cliff scenery, and relative privacy makes Portús a distinctive destination on the Costa Cálida.
