Nador, Morocco

Nador is a Moroccan city in the northeastern Rif region, just 15 km from Melilla's city centre across the Beni Enzar land border crossing. The journey takes 45 to 90 minutes door-to-door including border formalities, making it the most accessible Moroccan destination from Melilla. Visitors can walk to the Beni Enzar crossing in approximately 30 minutes or take a taxi for around €6 from Melilla centre, then hire a Moroccan taxi to Nador city for around 300 MAD (approximately €27). Nador lies beside Marchica Lagoon, a 25-kilometre elongated coastal lake separated from the Mediterranean by a thin sand bar, offering scenic waterfront walks along its promenade. The city's medina quarter centres on the Place du Marché, where vendors sell spices, fresh produce, textiles, and handicrafts typical of the Eastern Rif region. The covered morning souk fills with activity from early morning until midday, making a morning arrival ideal for experiencing the market at its busiest. Lunch can be taken at one of the simple restaurants near the port area — grilled fish and harira soup are local staples at very modest prices. The afternoon offers time to explore the Marchica lagoon waterfront promenade or browse the Derb El Houta commercial district for fabric and leather goods. Returning through Beni Enzar in the late afternoon avoids the peak foot-traffic crossing times of early morning and midday. October through May provides the most comfortable temperatures for walking the city; summer heat in the Nador basin regularly exceeds 38 °C, making prolonged outdoor exploration uncomfortable. The city's Spanish-Moroccan cultural blend, visible in the architecture and cross-border commerce, gives Nador a distinctive character among Moroccan cities.
