Sea Kayaking — Melilla Coastline

Sea kayaking along Melilla's rocky coastline combines Mediterranean marine exploration with close-up views of the Spanish enclave's historic architecture and military fortifications, many of which descend directly to the sea's edge. The designated launch point at Playa de los Cárabos provides a sandy entry and exit for kayakers and sits within easy reach of the main port and city centre.

The most popular circuit follows the southern and eastern coastline, covering 6–10 kilometres depending on conditions and the paddler's pace. The route passes beneath the walls of the Old City (Melilla la Vieja), a Renaissance-era fortified medina whose bastions drop almost vertically into the sea. Paddlers then continue east toward the calmer waters off Playa de los Alemanes, where the rocky shoreline is accessible only from the water and shelters sea caves, arches, and colonies of Mediterranean cormorant and yellow-legged gull. A shorter northern circuit suits beginners and visits the sandy beaches near the Hipódromo district.

Kayak hire is available through the Real Club Náutico de Melilla, which provides life jackets and paddles as part of the hire package. No formal kayaking certification is required for calm-water day hire; however, Club Náutico staff assess conditions and may restrict self-guided hire on days when the Levante wind exceeds force 3, producing surface chop that makes the southern headland technically demanding for inexperienced paddlers. In such cases, organised guided sessions with an experienced leader remain available.

The circuit is accessible to most adults in reasonable fitness. A full coastal circuit of 10 kilometres takes 3–4 hours of paddling at a leisurely pace, and no previous kayaking experience is necessary for the shorter northern route. Participants are advised to apply high-factor waterproof sunscreen and carry at least one litre of water per person. Photography opportunities are considerable around the fort bastions at Melilla la Vieja, and a waterproof phone case or action camera is worth arranging before departure. The best conditions occur from May through June and again in September through October, when the Alboran Sea is relatively calm and air temperatures are comfortable for active paddling.
