Madrid Weather & Climate Guide 2025
Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Madrid.
Madrid is Spain's vibrant capital and largest city, a metropolis of world-class art museums, grand boulevards, lively plazas, and an electric nightlife that never sleeps. As the Autonomous Community of Madrid, the region combines the cosmopolitan energy of the city with green sierra mountains, historic royal towns, and charming villages within easy reach.
Best Time to Visit
Best Months
April–June, September–October
Spring and early autumn offer warm, sunny days (18–25°C), low humidity, and manageable crowds; spring brings blooming roses in Retiro Park and the San Isidro festival in May; September–October sees cooler temperatures ideal for exploring the city on foot
Months to Avoid
August (peak summer)
August sees temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C (sometimes 40°C), many local restaurants close as Madrileños head on holiday, and the city can feel like a furnace with little shade. The city empties of locals but fills with tourists
Climate Overview
Madrid has a semi-arid continental climate (Köppen BSk) characterised by hot, dry summers and cold winters, with very low rainfall year-round. The city sits at 667 metres altitude at the geographic heart of the Iberian Plateau, which amplifies temperature extremes — one of Europe's hottest capital cities in summer and genuinely cold in winter with occasional snowfall. Sunshine is abundant throughout the year (over 2,700 hours annually).

Seasonal Breakdown
Detailed information for each season.
🌸 Spring
March–May
The most beautiful season in Madrid — mild temperatures (12–22°C), wildflowers and roses blooming in Retiro Park and the Royal Botanical Garden, outdoor café terraces filling up, and the San Isidro festival bringing the city alive in mid-May. Some rain in March–April but nothing disruptive.
☀️ Summer
June–August
Intensely hot (28–38°C regularly; heatwaves above 40°C), dry, and sunny. Long days (sunrise 06:30, sunset 21:30) allow extended sightseeing. Museums become a welcome air-conditioned refuge. Veranos de la Villa festival brings free outdoor concerts and events. August is when Madrileños flee — some local spots close.
🍂 Fall
September–November
September and October are arguably the best months of all — warm (20–25°C), post-summer sunshine, manageable crowds, and the city's cultural calendar reopening. November gets noticeably colder and greyer but is still manageable for sightseeing with fewer tourists and lower hotel prices.
❄️ Winter
December–February
Cold with temperatures regularly dropping to 1–6°C, occasional frost, and rare but memorable snowfall. December is magical for the Christmas markets, Navidad lights on Gran Vía, and ice-skating rinks. January and February are quiet with lowest hotel prices and short days but clear, sunny weather is common between cold snaps.
