A long-distance ridge walk along the highest section of the Sierra de Guadarrama, following the watershed between Madrid and Castilla y León. Spectacular views throughout; requires good fitness and mountain experience. Best done one-way with transport arranged at each end.
The Cuerda Larga is the highest and most exposed ridge in the Community of Madrid section of the Sierra de Guadarrama, following the watershed between the provinces of Madrid and Segovia at elevations consistently above 2,000 metres. The GR-10 long-distance route traverses this ridge over approximately 22 kilometres from Miraflores de la Sierra in the east to Puerto de Navacerrada in the west, requiring strong fitness and significant experience of mountain terrain. The trailhead at Miraflores de la Sierra is reached by bus from Plaza de Castilla in Madrid; buses run approximately hourly and the journey takes around one hour. The ascent from Miraflores climbs steeply through scrub and pine forest before gaining the main ridge near La Najarra peak at 2,105 metres, which marks the eastern boundary of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. From La Najarra, the route follows the ridge continuously west, passing Cabezas de Hierro Menor and Cabezas de Hierro Mayor, the highest point on the route at 2,383 metres, before descending to Puerto de Navacerrada. The ridge surface is predominantly granite rock, loose scree, and exposed earth path. Above 2,100 metres the trail is fully exposed with no tree cover and no shade for the majority of the route. Wind speeds on the crest can be extreme even in summer, and afternoon thunderstorms develop rapidly during July and August; all walkers should clear the ridge before 2:00 PM. No shelter, refuge huts, or reliable water sources exist on the ridge; hikers must carry a minimum of 2.5 litres of water per person from the trailhead. The one-way nature of the route requires logistical planning: leaving a vehicle at Puerto de Navacerrada or arranging a taxi return while starting from Miraflores. Views from the ridge encompass the Lozoya Valley, the Segovia plain, the Somosierra mountains to the northeast, and on clear days the Gredos range to the southwest. The route is best attempted by walkers with previous multi-hour mountain experience; a GPS track downloaded in advance is strongly recommended as the ridge path can be indistinct in places and visibility can drop rapidly with incoming cloud.

Tips for visiting
- Set off by 6:30 AM at the latest to complete the ridge before afternoon thunderstorms; the exposed crest is extremely dangerous in lightning.
- Carry a minimum of 2.5 litres of water per person as there are no reliable water sources on the entire ridge.
- A GPS track (available from Wikiloc or the IGN app) is strongly recommended; the path can be unclear in fog or mist.
- Arrange a vehicle or taxi at Puerto de Navacerrada in advance; do not rely on finding transport at the end of the route.
- From November to April, crampons, an ice axe, and winter mountaineering experience are required as the ridge holds deep snow and ice.
- Download offline maps before departure; phone signal is absent for long sections of the upper ridge.
When to visit
June through September in stable weather, starting before 7:00 AM to clear the ridge before afternoon thunderstorms. Spring (April to May) is possible but snow conditions on the ridge must be checked in advance.
Accessibility
The Cuerda Larga ridge traverse is entirely unsuitable for wheelchair users or pushchairs. The trail involves sustained rocky and scree terrain, extended exposed ridge walking at over 2,000 metres elevation, and no accessible infrastructure at any point along the route.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Cuerda Larga a loop trail?
No. The GR-10 traverse is a point-to-point route of 22 kilometres from Miraflores de la Sierra to Puerto de Navacerrada. Return transport must be arranged at the destination end before setting out.
What level of experience is needed?
Strong mountain fitness is required, along with experience on exposed ridges, the ability to navigate in low visibility, and awareness of rapidly changing alpine weather. This is not a suitable route for beginners or those without prior mountain experience.
What is the risk from thunderstorms?
Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through September in the Sierra de Guadarrama. All hikers should aim to leave the exposed ridge before 2:00 PM and should turn back immediately if clouds build rapidly or thunder is heard.
Are there water sources on the ridge?
There are no reliable water sources on the ridge above the treeline. All water must be carried from the trailhead; a minimum of 2.5 litres per person is recommended for the full traverse.
Can the Cuerda Larga be done in winter?
Winter traverses require full alpine gear including crampons, an ice axe, and navigation equipment. Only experienced winter mountaineers should attempt the route between November and April when the ridge holds deep snow and ice.
