Burgos is built around one of Spain's great Gothic cathedrals, begun in 1221 and dense with side chapels, an octagonal lantern tower, and the tomb of El Cid and his wife Jimena beneath the crossing. The city is also a long-standing waypoint on the Camino de Santiago, so its old town has the layered, pilgrim-worn feel of a place that has been a stopover for centuries rather than a destination built for tourists. The Museo de la Evolución Humana, tied to the nearby Atapuerca archaeological sites, gives the city a second, very different draw if there's time.
