Bar La Minerva

Bar La Minerva is the quintessential Spanish workers' bar: a place where the goals of eating well and eating economically are served simultaneously without compromise to either. Located on Calle Sagasta near Mérida's central market, it operates from early morning through midnight with a menu that shifts from breakfast coffees and pastries through lunchtime tapas and a budget menú del día to evening raciones and drinks. The morning tostadas — thick slices of bread rubbed with tomato and drizzled with olive oil — are a perfectly calibrated start to a day of sightseeing among Mérida's Roman monuments. The tapas programme builds from mid-morning: croquetas de jamón, made with a properly thick béchamel dark with ibérico flavour, are among the best in the city at their price point. Pinchos morunos — small skewers of spiced pork — are a daily staple. The tosta con Torta del Casar, a slice of bread loaded with the famously runny, almost liquid sheep's milk cheese, represents one of the simplest and most satisfying snacks in the Extremaduran repertoire. The menú del día at around €9 offers an extraordinary equation: starter, main, dessert, bread and house wine at a price that undercuts almost every restaurant near the central market. The interior is small and authentic — a bar counter with stools, three or four tables, mirrors and the constant background noise of a busy local café. No reservations are accepted or needed. It is one of the best introductions to Mérida's everyday food culture available.
