Corral de Comedias de Almagro

The Corral de Comedias de Almagro, set into the southwestern corner of Almagro's Plaza Mayor in the Ciudad Real province of Castile-La Mancha, Spain, is the only 17th-century Spanish open-air corral theatre to survive in complete and functioning condition anywhere in the world. Built around 1628 as part of the Mesón de la Fruta — an inn and tavern — the theatre retains its original structure essentially unchanged: three tiers of wooden balconied galleries wrap around a rectangular courtyard with a stone-flagged pit where standing spectators (the mosqueteros, or groundlings) once watched comedias by Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca. The stage is a raised timber platform backed by a tiring house facade with doorways from which actors made their entrances. During the year, the theatre operates as a guided museum (€5), with tours visiting the stage, galleries, and backstage areas including period-era painted scenery panels and the original trapdoor mechanisms. Every July, the Corral de Comedias becomes the centrepiece of the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Almagro, one of Europe's most important classical theatre festivals, bringing Spain's national drama companies and international touring productions to the historic stage and to open-air venues around the town. Festival performance tickets (€15–€30) sell quickly and should be reserved months ahead through the festival website. Beyond the theatre, Almagro's Plaza Mayor is one of the finest in New Castile: an arcaded square lined with green-painted window frames against whitewashed facades, giving the town a distinctive visual identity that sets it apart from larger La Mancha cities.
