Cabañeros National Park

Cabañeros National Park straddles the border of Toledo and Ciudad Real provinces in Castile-La Mancha, Spain, and protects one of the largest remaining fragments of the Mediterranean mixed woodland ecosystem that once covered much of the Iberian interior. Declared a national park in 1995, Cabañeros encompasses around 40,000 hectares of ancient alluvial plateaus (rañas) covered in holm oak, cork oak, wild olive, and strawberry tree, rising at the park's eastern edge to quartzite mountains in the Sierra del Chorito. It is among the most important refuges in Spain for the Spanish imperial eagle, a species with a very limited global population, and also supports red and fallow deer, wild boar, black stork, Eurasian black vulture, and Iberian lynx. The park's dense vegetation makes wildlife sightings from walking trails difficult; the principal visitor experience is a guided jeep safari lasting three to four hours, departing from the main visitor area at Pueblonuevo del Bullaque. Safari vehicles travel deep into the rañas on unpaved tracks, with experienced naturalist guides scanning the oak canopy and clearings. October brings the deer rut, during which the bellowing of red stags echoes across the woodland at dawn and dusk. The only self-guided option is a 2.5-kilometre walking trail near the Casa del Parque visitor centre. Spring visits between April and May coincide with wildflower blooms transforming the rañas. The park has no internal shops or fuel; visitors must arrive self-sufficient with food, water, and sun protection. Accommodation is available in Pueblonuevo del Bullaque and nearby Horcajo de los Montes.
