New moon nights are essential — even a quarter moon significantly degrades the faintest nebulosity and reduces the galactic core contrast.

The summit road (LP-4) is a public road accessible by car at night. It is narrow and winding with no street lighting; arriving before sunset allows orientation to the site and identification of key shooting positions near the telescope domes. Wide parking areas near the GTC dome and the National Galileo Telescope provide stable flat ground for tripods. Temperatures drop to near 0°C after sunset even in midsummer at this altitude; layered clothing, gloves, and warm footwear are essential regardless of season. No commercial facilities operate at the summit at night.
