Hotel Formentor, a Royal Hideaway is one of the oldest and most celebrated resort hotels in Spain, opened in 1929 by Argentine entrepreneur Adan Diehl on what remains the most spectacular beach in Mallorca. The hotel occupies a privileged position at the end of the Formentor Peninsula in northern Mallorca, approximately 60 kilometres from Palma and reachable by a winding mountain road through pine forest. The Platja de Formentor beach — a long arc of pale sand sheltered by pines and turquoise water — is considered among the finest in the Mediterranean and is shared with the adjacent Barceló property. Over its nearly century-long history, the hotel has hosted Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, the British Royal Family, and numerous other notable guests, accumulating a distinguished heritage that the current operator, part of Barceló's Royal Hideaway luxury brand, honours through meticulous restoration. The 125 rooms and suites are spread across the original whitewashed mansion and adjacent wings, with interiors that combine the original Art Deco character with contemporary luxury. Sea-facing rooms and suites offer the most celebrated views. Dining options include the El Formentor restaurant for refined Mediterranean cuisine and the Beach Club for casual lunches and cocktails at the water's edge. The spa facilities are extensive, with indoor and outdoor pools, treatment rooms, and a fitness centre. A kids club operates during the summer season, making the hotel suitable for families as well as couples. Water sports equipment hire is available on the beach. The hotel operates seasonally from spring through autumn, with peak season in July and August bringing maximum activity, warmth, and prices.
