  • DurationFull day

Formentera is Spain's smallest permanently inhabited island and arguably the least developed in the western Mediterranean, a flat limestone plateau 19 kilometers long with a natural landscape of salt flats, pine forest, and dunes that has changed little in decades. The island's terrain — maximum elevation 192 meters at La Mola plateau — and well-maintained network of cycling routes (rutas ciclistes) make it exceptionally well suited to bicycle exploration, and cycling is widely considered the definitive way to experience Formentera.

Formentera is Spain's smallest inhabited island and arguably its most naturally beautiful, with extraordinary Maldives-like turquoise water and flat terrain perfectly suited to cycling. A network of well-signposted cycling routes crosses the island through salt flats, pine forests, and past prehistoric towers (talaiots). The northern spit of Es Trucadors leading to the Illetes sandbar is the most famous cycle route, ending at a beach often ranked among Europe's top ten.

Bicycles can be rented at La Savina port within minutes of the ferry arrival from Ibiza, with a range from basic cycles to electric-assist bikes available at prices typically between €15 and €20 per day. The island's eight signposted cycle routes total approximately 80 kilometers and range from the flat, 5-kilometer coastal spit of Es Trucadors to the more challenging ascent to the La Mola lighthouse at the eastern end. The Es Trucadors route leads to the Ses Illetes sandbar, consistently ranked among the top ten beaches in Europe, where turquoise water extends in both directions on a narrow strip of sand. The route through the interior passes prehistoric talaies (watchtowers), the village of Sant Francesc Xavier with its market and churches, and salt flats where flamingos are sometimes visible. The La Mola plateau at the eastern end contains the lighthouse and a dramatic cliff face dropping 120 meters to the sea, rewarding the climb with panoramic views. Most cycling routes are family-friendly and suitable for children with basic cycling ability. The island's flat terrain also makes it highly suitable for electric-assist bikes for visitors who prefer less exertion.

When to visit

May, June, and September offer ideal cycling weather — warm, with a sea breeze, minimal traffic, and beaches that are swimmable but not overcrowded. July and August are hot and the Es Trucadors route becomes very busy. Starting cycling by 8AM in summer allows the main routes to be completed before afternoon heat peaks.

Accessibility

The flat routes in northern Formentera — particularly the Es Trucadors spit to Ses Illetes — are accessible by standard wheelchair-adapted cycles or hand-cycles on firm, generally level surfaces. Electric-assist adapted cycles can be arranged by some hire operators with advance notice. The La Mola plateau route involves significant gradients and is not suitable for most adaptive cycling.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to cycle around Formentera?

A full circuit of the island's main routes, including Ses Illetes and La Mola, takes a full day on a standard bicycle. Cycling to Ses Illetes alone is 1 to 1.5 hours return from La Savina port on flat ground.

Are bicycles available for rent on the island?

Multiple hire shops operate at La Savina port (the ferry terminal) and in Sant Francesc Xavier. Standard, electric-assist, and children's bicycles are available. Helmets and locks are typically included. No advance reservation is usually needed except in peak August.
