Coves del Drac (Dragon Caves), Porto Cristo

The Coves del Drac (Dragon Caves) near the east coast town of Porto Cristo are among the world's great cave show systems, and one of the attractions in Mallorca that genuinely merits the crowds it receives. Discovered and mapped in the late 19th century by French geologist Édouard-Alfred Martel, the cave system extends for approximately 2.4 kilometers through four interconnected caverns — the Cueva Negra, Cueva Blanca, Cueva Luis Salvador, and Cueva de las Delicias — containing perhaps the most spectacular concentration of stalactite and stalagmite formations in the Mediterranean. The geological centerpiece is Lake Martel, named after its discoverer and measuring 177 meters in length and 30 meters in depth — one of the largest underground lakes in the world. The guided tour follows a circular illuminated route through all four chambers, culminating at the lakeside where visitors take seats in a natural amphitheater for a live classical music concert. The musicians float across the dark water on illuminated boats playing works by Bach and Chopin, then dock at the far shore to collect passengers for a short boat ride across the lake — an experience that is theatrical, surreal, and genuinely moving. The constant temperature of 21°C makes the caves comfortable year-round regardless of outside weather. Sessions run multiple times daily and last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes total. Timed entry is enforced and advance booking is strongly recommended in summer months.
