Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Western Cape.

Western Cape is South Africa's most visited province, home to the iconic Table Mountain, world-renowned Cape Winelands, the spectacular Garden Route, and the vibrant city of Cape Town. It offers a unique Mediterranean climate, diverse landscapes ranging from dramatic coastlines to semi-desert Karoo, and a rich cultural tapestry blending Cape Malay, Khoikhoi, Dutch, and British heritage.

Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Western Cape.

1

Bo-Kaap Colorful Houses

📸 early morningarchitecture / street

The rows of vividly painted Cape Malay houses climbing Signal Hill slopes are one of South Africa's most iconic images. Rose Street, Chiappini Street, and Wale Street offer the densest concentration of photogenic facades.

Photo tip: Arrive before 8AM for soft light and empty streets. By 10AM tour groups arrive in force. The steep streets create natural leading lines.
2

Table Mountain Cable Car & Summit

📸 golden hour / sunsetlandscape

The summit plateau offers 360° views encompassing Cape Town, the Atlantic, False Bay, and the Cape Peninsula. The rotating cable car also provides excellent aerial shots during the ascent.

Photo tip: Stay for sunset if weather permits - the orange light on the city and sea is extraordinary. Buy last cable car down to stay for golden hour.
3

Camps Bay Beach at Sunset

📸 sunsetlandscape / beach

The combination of the Twelve Apostles mountain backdrop, palm trees, Atlantic Ocean, and the golden sunset light makes Camps Bay Beach one of the most photographed beach scenes in Africa. The sunsets are reliable and spectacular from December to March.

Photo tip: Position yourself with the Twelve Apostles to your right for the classic composition. The beach bars offer elevated vantage points.
4

Chapman's Peak Viewpoints

📸 late afternoonlandscape / coastal

Multiple official pullouts along the Chapman's Peak Drive offer dramatic shots of the cliff road carved into the mountain face, the Atlantic far below, and Hout Bay stretching into the distance. The late afternoon light hits the orange-red cliffs beautifully.

Photo tip: Stop at the main Chapman's Peak viewpoint for the classic composition showing the road curving into the cliff face.
5

Boulders Beach Penguins

📸 morningwildlife

The African penguin colony at Boulders Beach offers extraordinary close-up wildlife photography from the boardwalk. Penguins are remarkably unperturbed by cameras. Morning light is best and crowds are smaller.

Photo tip: Visit on weekdays to avoid weekend crowds. Bring a zoom lens for compressed wildlife shots from the boardwalk, but wide angle also captures the mass of penguins beautifully.
6

Lion's Head Summit

📸 sunriselandscape

The conical peak of Lion's Head provides the classic Cape Town panorama with Table Mountain and the city below. Sunrise from the summit is one of the most dramatic photography experiences in South Africa.

Photo tip: Start the hike at 5AM for a summer sunrise. The full moon hike also produces incredible long-exposure shots of the city lights.
7

Franschhoek Valley from La Petite Ferme

📸 morninglandscape / vineyard

The panoramic view over the entire Franschhoek Valley from the upper wine estates - particularly La Petite Ferme and Haute Cabriere - encompasses vineyards, the village, and the encircling mountains in a classic Cape Winelands composition.

Photo tip: Vine rows create perfect leading lines when shot at an angle. March-April harvest season adds golden colours to the vines.
8

Kirstenbosch Tree Canopy Walkway (Boomslang)

📸 afternoonnature / architecture

The undulating steel-and-timber 'Boomslang' walkway snakes through the tree canopy above Kirstenbosch, offering unusual treetop perspectives of the garden, Table Mountain slopes, and the canopy of ancient trees below.

Photo tip: Visit in late afternoon when the sun is lower and the light filters through the canopy. The walkway itself as a design object photographs beautifully from either end.
9

Cape of Good Hope Lighthouse

📸 morninglandscape

The historic Cape Point lighthouse stands on a dramatic cliff 247 metres above the Atlantic, with extraordinary views of the Cape Peninsula coast stretching away in both directions. Morning light illuminates the cliffs and turquoise water spectacularly.

Photo tip: Take the Flying Dutchman funicular up then walk to the old lighthouse for shots including the newer lighthouse below. Bring a polariser for sea colour.
10

Hermanus Cliff Path Whale Watching

📸 morningwildlife

From June to November, Southern Right Whales in Walker Bay can be photographed from the cliff paths at Hermanus - some of the most dramatic whale photography available without a boat. Whales breach, slap, and nurse calves just below.

Photo tip: A telephoto lens (200-400mm) is ideal for whale shots from the cliff. Visit the Old Harbour viewpoint for the most elevated angle.
