Hostel Celica

Hostel Celica occupies a former military prison in Metelkova ulica, at the edge of Ljubljana's Metelkova alternative culture district, an autonomous zone of squatted barracks turned street art, clubs, and studios — the old town and train station are both within a 10-15 minute walk. The building's history is the hostel's main draw: each of the 20 former cells was handed to a different artist or architect to redesign, so no two rooms look alike, ranging from minimalist to elaborately themed installations, while the bars have been left in place as a design feature rather than removed. Standard dormitory beds sit alongside these artist cells (booked as doubles) and family rooms for those who want more space. There's no restaurant, but an on-site cafe/bar doubles as a cultural venue hosting concerts, exhibitions, and events tied to the surrounding Metelkova scene, plus a small art gallery in the building. A communal kitchen is available for self-catering, and the hostel runs regular cultural programming rather than resort-style amenities — there is no spa, pool, or fitness center. The atmosphere and staff are informal and social, aimed squarely at backpackers, artists, and travelers drawn to Ljubljana's alternative culture rather than families seeking a conventional hotel stay.
