Qasr Al Hokm, often translated as the Justice Palace or Palace of Government, stands on Deera Square in Ad Dirah, the old centre of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It has served as a seat of administration and justice in the capital and forms the civic core of the old city, next to the Grand Mosque and close to Masmak Fortress and Souq Al Zal. The building is designed in the Najdi style, with a facade of earth-coloured walls, crenellated parapets, repeated triangular window openings and heavy carved wooden doors. Its form follows the vernacular architecture of central Arabia, in which mud brick and palm timber were used to resist heat. The palace was rebuilt and renovated in the twentieth century as part of the redevelopment of the old centre, with modern construction adopting traditional appearance. It is an administrative building and is generally viewed from the outside rather than entered, so there are no curated exhibits or guided galleries. The experience is architectural and urban: visitors stand on Deera Square, a large paved plaza, and observe the palace in its setting alongside the neighbouring mosque and the clock-tower-like features of the district. In the evening the facade is lit, and the square is busy with local life. The surrounding area was restored and pedestrianised as part of efforts to revive the historic core, and the paving, lighting and landscaping reflect that work. The square has also been the stage for public gatherings and ceremonies through the years. Qasr Al Hokm is best appreciated on a walking route through Ad Dirah, which can include Masmak Fortress, the souq and nearby lanes within a short distance. Public access to the square is possible at all hours, though the palace interior is not open to casual visitors. Photography of the exterior is common, but visitors should avoid photographing officials or restricted areas.
