Bargaining Tips
How to negotiate prices in local markets.
Bargaining is expected and normal in traditional souqs (Al Balad, Taif markets) — start at 60-70% of asking price
Fixed prices apply at all malls, chain stores, and most restaurants — do not try to bargain there
Gold is sold by international market weight price — the only negotiable element is the 'making fee'
Vendors in tourist souqs may quote higher prices to obvious tourists — watch local shoppers for realistic price reference
Being friendly and patient during negotiation is essential — building rapport before bargaining leads to better prices
When NOT to Bargain
- Fixed-price shops and malls
- Government emporiums
- Restaurants and hotels
- Supermarkets and pharmacies
