Ponte de Lima — Portugal's Oldest Town

Ponte de Lima, widely cited as Portugal's oldest town, sits 74 km north of Porto and is reached in about 1 hour 10 minutes by combining a CP train to Viana do Castelo (1.5 hr, €5.80 (~$6.73)) with an Arriva bus onward to Ponte de Lima (30 min, €3 (~$3.48)); driving via the A28/A27 takes about an hour and is generally the more direct option given the two-leg transit route. The town is built around a Roman-medieval bridge spanning the Lima river, with a long riverside promenade lined by plane trees where a market has been held for centuries. A morning arrival allows a walk across the bridge, a visit to the Torre da Cadeia Velha and the medieval old town's narrow streets, and time at the riverside gardens where the Feiras Novas festival grounds sit. Afternoon can be spent visiting a nearby Vinho Verde quinta for a tasting of the region's young, slightly effervescent wine, or walking part of the Camino de Santiago Portuguese coastal route, which passes through the town. On the second and fourth Mondays of the month, the historic Feira do Cavalo and general market bring stalls along the riverbank, worth timing a visit around if travelling by car. Restaurants along Rua Formosa and the riverside serve regional dishes such as arroz de sarrabulho and rojões, paired with the local Vinho Verde. Ponte de Lima works year-round, but the August Feiras Novas festival brings fireworks, folk parades, and a much livelier riverside atmosphere, along with heavier crowds and a need for advance planning if staying overnight. A morning departure from Porto is recommended given the two-leg transit connection, leaving enough time for the bridge, old town, and a quinta visit before the return journey.
