Peneda-Gerês National Park

Peneda-Gerês National Park, Portugal's only national park, lies about 90 km north of Porto and is best reached by car in roughly 1 hour 30 minutes; without a car, the route takes about 2 hours via a train to Braga followed by the Arriva 350 bus to Caldas do Gerês. Car hire from Porto airport starts around €35 (~$41) per day, and organised jeep tours from Porto run €45–€65 (~$52–$75) per person. The park spans granite peaks, oak and pine forest, and the Cávado river system, with highlights including the Mata de Albergaria old-growth forest, the Roman-era Geira road with its milestone markers, the Vilarinho das Furnas reservoir and submerged village ruins, and Garrano wild ponies grazing the highlands. A day trip typically starts early at the Caldas do Gerês visitor centre for maps and trail conditions, followed by a morning hike along one of the Mata de Albergaria trails or to the Tahiti waterfall pools, a popular but sometimes crowded swimming spot in summer. Afternoon can be spent driving the scenic road toward Campo do Gerês and Vilarinho das Furnas, stopping at highland viewpoints, or continuing to the Peneda side for the pilgrimage sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda. Food options are limited inside the park; Caldas do Gerês has a handful of tascas serving regional Minho fare such as cabrito assado, and picnicking with supplies bought in Braga beforehand is common on longer trail days. May through October is the main hiking season, with April bringing wildflowers to the lower valleys and September–October giving autumn colour in the beech and oak stands; winter access to higher trails can be limited by weather. An early start is important given the park's size and the limited number of return buses if not driving.
