Praia de Espinho

Praia de Espinho is a long, open stretch of fine golden sand on the Atlantic coast south of Porto, in the Norte region of Portugal, backed by a raised wooden promenade and the compact grid streets of Espinho town. The water is cool and clear with a consistent beach-break swell that has made the town one of Portugal's established surf and bodyboard hubs, drawing both a strong local surf community and a summer influx of visitors. The beach is wide and largely unbroken for several kilometres, fully exposed to Atlantic wind and swell, giving it a more energetic character than sheltered coves further inland. Family-friendly stretches sit closer to the lifeguard towers near the town centre, while the surf breaks toward the northern and southern ends of the strand attract a younger, sportier crowd. Amenities are well developed: lifeguards patrol through the summer, beach showers and changing facilities line the promenade, and a run of seafood restaurants and cafés sit just steps from the sand along the boardwalk. Parking is available in town, though it fills on race weekends when Espinho hosts surf and bodyboard competitions. The CP train connects directly from Porto São Bento in about 25 minutes, making it one of the easiest beach day trips from the city. Espinho's boardwalk-and-casino-town feel gives the beach a slightly more built-up, resort-like atmosphere compared to quieter beaches further north, while the surf culture and seafood scene give it a distinct identity within the Porto coastline.
