Palácio da Bolsa

Palácio da Bolsa is a 19th-century Neoclassical building constructed as Porto's stock exchange by the city's commercial association, and it remains one of the most lavish civic interiors in northern Portugal. Visitors enter through the Pátio das Nações, a glass-roofed courtyard ringed with the painted coats of arms of nations Porto traded with historically, before a grand staircase leads up to the building's showpiece, the Salão Árabe or Arabian Hall, a gilded Moorish-revival ballroom of stuccowork and colour completed over 18 years in the late 19th century. Other rooms on the guided route include the former trading hall, preserved with period furnishings, and a portrait gallery tracing Porto's commercial history. The palace can only be seen on a guided tour, which departs roughly every 30 minutes and lasts about an hour, so visitors should arrive a little ahead of a chosen time slot rather than expecting free-roam access. Weekday mornings draw noticeably smaller tour groups than weekend afternoons, when the palace is a fixture on coach-tour itineraries from the nearby Ribeira district. Tours run in multiple languages on a rotating schedule, so visitors wanting an English-language guide should confirm the time when booking, ideally online in peak season. The palace sits immediately beside the Romanesque-Gothic Igreja de São Francisco, making the two an easy pairing on the same visit.
