Taberna Ruel

Taberna Ruel sits on Rua de Santa Maria, one of Funchal's oldest streets and the heart of the city's old town dining scene, serving traditional Madeiran seafood in a rustic dining room with exposed beams and a small terrace onto the pedestrian lane. The menu is built around fresh fish bought daily, with grilled black scabbardfish finished in banana — a pairing considered emblematic of Madeiran cuisine — and a simple tuna steak with onion and tomato as the two most-ordered plates. Cooking is straightforward and home-style rather than technical, in keeping with the taberna format. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious, with wooden tables, low lighting, and a mix of residents and visitors filling the room by early evening; the outdoor terrace seats are the most requested and fill first on warm nights. There is no formal wine list to speak of, but house Portuguese reds and whites by the glass suit the seafood-forward menu, and a glass of poncha is a common way to start the meal. Because of its location on the most walked street in the old town, Taberna Ruel is busy through the evening; reserving ahead for dinner is advisable, particularly for outdoor tables, though lunch is generally easier to walk into without a booking.
