Ponta de São Lourenço

Ponta de São Lourenço is Madeira's easternmost peninsula, a treeless, wind-scoured ridge where exposed layers of red, orange, ochre and green volcanic rock run out toward the open Atlantic. The strongest images use a wide-angle lens along the ridgeline trail, framing the layered rock bands in the foreground against the peninsula's tail and the sea beyond. Low, raking light in late afternoon and through golden hour rakes across the mineral bands and brings out their colour contrast far more than the flat overhead light of midday, which washes the tones out. The peninsula can be photographed year-round, since the geology does not depend on season, though spring adds a scattering of wildflower colour to the otherwise arid slopes and the air tends to be clearer than in the hazier summer months. The trail out to Baía d'Abra draws a steady stream of hikers, so the path itself is often busy through midday, but the crowd thins by late afternoon as day-trippers head back, leaving the best light with the fewest people in frame. A tripod is easy to use along the wide, unobstructed trail. The peninsula sits inside a protected natural park, and drone flights require prior authorisation from Madeira's forestry service. There is no entry fee, though the exposed ridge is fully shadeless and can be extremely windy, which is worth planning for when timing a late return in fading light.
