Fanal Forest

Fanal's high plateau is scattered with centuries-old, wind-sculpted laurel (til) trees standing alone in open pasture, and its most recognisable images isolate one or two of these gnarled trunks against a background of drifting fog, using a telephoto lens to compress the scene and separate a single tree from its neighbours. The site depends almost entirely on mist for its atmosphere: early morning is by far the best window, when fog often sits thickest among the trunks before burning off by midday and leaving a comparatively ordinary, exposed pasture. Mist can appear at Fanal at any time of year, but it is most consistent through the cooler months from October to April, when moisture-laden cloud rolls in more reliably off the north coast. The plateau is remote and only lightly visited outside of dedicated photography trips, so the location is rarely crowded, though dawn sees a small, recurring group of photographers who know the mist pattern. A tripod is straightforward to use across the open pasture. Fanal lies within Madeira's UNESCO-listed laurisilva forest and a protected natural park, so drone flights require prior permit from the forestry authorities. There is no entry fee, and the site is reached via an unpaved forestry road that should be driven with care in fog or after rain.
