Curral das Freiras Valley Walk (Eira do Serrado)

The walk begins at the Eira do Serrado viewpoint car park on the ER107, reached by car or bus route 81 in about 40 minutes from Funchal; there is no permit required, and the car park has basic facilities including a café. The round trip covers 5km with around 300m of descent into the valley and an equivalent climb back out on the return. The path is a steep, well-maintained cobbled switchback trail, technically straightforward but physically demanding on the return climb, with limited shade for the upper, more exposed section near the viewpoint and increasing tree cover lower into the valley. The main landmark is the Eira do Serrado viewpoint itself, at over 1000m, which frames a dramatic overlook of the volcanic crater valley below before the descent begins; further down, the trail passes terraced smallholdings before reaching the village of Curral das Freiras, once reachable only on foot and still known for its chestnut groves and small cafés serving local chestnut soup and liqueur. The village itself serves as the natural turn-around point. There are no water sources on the trail itself, though the village has cafés and a shop, and the steep, repeated switchbacks mean hikers should pace the return climb carefully, particularly in warm weather.
