Praia do Seixal

Praia do Seixal is one of Madeira's rare natural black-sand beaches, formed from volcanic basalt on the dramatic north coast near the village of Seixal, about 60km from Funchal. Unlike the imported-sand beaches at Calheta and Machico, the dark sand here is entirely natural, set beneath green terraced hillsides that rise steeply from the shore, a landscape distinctive even by Madeira's scenic standards. The beach faces the open Atlantic directly, so it receives a stronger, more consistent swell than the sheltered south-coast beaches, bringing rideable waves that attract surfers alongside travellers drawn to a wilder, less manicured stretch of shoreline. The exposure also means the water can be considerably rougher than at Funchal or Calheta, and conditions vary noticeably with the weather, so it suits confident swimmers and surfers more than young children. The setting is rural and relatively undeveloped compared with Madeira's south-coast beaches, with the terraced hills and the small fishing village of Seixal giving it a quieter, more untouched character rather than a resort atmosphere. Amenities are modest: a nearby cafe, showers, parking and the natural black sand itself, without the beach-bar strip or extensive dining found at Calheta or Praia Formosa. There is no confirmed lifeguard cover, so surfers and swimmers should judge conditions carefully, particularly given the stronger exposure to Atlantic swell. Reaching Seixal requires a Rodoeste intercity bus or a rental car via the VR1 north coast route, a scenic but time-consuming drive of well over an hour from Funchal through some of the island's most dramatic coastal scenery, including tunnels carved through the cliffs.
