Pensão Amor

Pensão Amor occupies a grand nineteenth-century townhouse at 19 Rua do Alecrim in Cais do Sodré, one block from Rua Nova do Carvalho — the neon-lit strip known locally as Rua Cor-de-Rosa for its concentration of late-night bars. The building operated as a brothel for most of the twentieth century and was converted in 2011 into a boutique guesthouse by the creative group behind the adjacent Music Box club. That history shapes every design decision: rooms display erotic paintings and vintage prints, corridor walls are hung with curated art installations, and a ground-floor boutique sells illustrated books and accessories aligned with the property's aesthetic.

Rooms divide into standard doubles, superior doubles, and a junior suite, each furnished with antique iron beds, velvet headboards, and deliberate theatrical excess. Ceilings retain their original plasterwork; floor tiles are original nineteenth-century encaustic. Air conditioning is provided. The ground-floor bar is one of Lisbon's more distinctive drinking spaces, hosting occasional burlesque and cabaret performances and serving cocktails until the early hours. Breakfast is not offered, but the Time Out Market Lisbon — one of Portugal's most celebrated food halls — is a six-minute walk toward Cais do Sodré station.

Reception operates around the clock, reflecting the neighbourhood's late-night character. The property is adult-oriented and not suited to families with young children. It suits creatively inclined couples, cultural travellers, and night-active visitors who want a central Lisbon base with genuine character rather than chain-hotel neutrality. Cais do Sodré metro and train station — serving Cascais and Belém lines — is a four-minute walk, making day trips easy despite the property's clear evening orientation.
