Lisboa (Lisbon) is Portugal's sun-drenched capital, a city of seven hills overlooking the wide mouth of the Tagus River where it meets the Atlantic. One of Europe's oldest and most atmospheric capitals, Lisbon blends Moorish alleyways, Manueline monasteries, baroque palaces, and cutting-edge contemporary culture into a tapestry of faded grandeur and vibrant renewal. The city's golden Age of Discoveries legacy is visible in every azulejo-tiled facade, and audible in the mournful strains of fado drifting from Alfama's cobbled lanes.

Foodie tips
Get more out of every meal.
The most authentic and affordable food experiences in Lisbon are in neighbourhood tascas and cervejarias, not in tourist-facing restaurants near the main squares.
Lisbon's food tour operators generally work with small, artisan, and local producers; expect to visit shops and vendors not visible from a guidebook.
The Time Out Market is an excellent introduction to Lisbon's food scene but not a substitute for exploring neighbourhood restaurants.
Lunch (12:30–14:30) is the best value meal time; most Portuguese restaurants offer a full two-course prato do dia with drink for €8–12 (~$8.65–13).
Reserve cooking classes and popular food tours at least 3–5 days in advance; the best operators fill up quickly in summer.
Dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free) should be communicated to tour operators when booking; most can accommodate with advance notice.
