Originally a textile manufacturing site, the compound was taken over from around 2008 by a rotating community of independent shops, design studios, restaurants, cafés, bookshops, and event spaces. The industrial character has been deliberately preserved: the main thoroughfares are cobbled factory lanes, the walls are painted with large-scale murals, and the interiors of the converted spaces retain exposed brickwork, timber beams, and original machinery. Ler Devagar — the bookshop inside a former press room with a vintage flying bicycle suspended from the rafters — is one of Lisbon's most celebrated bookshops. Restaurants and bars occupy former weaving halls and loading docks; several have rooftop terraces with direct views up to the bridge deck. The entire compound comes most alive on Sunday mornings when the weekly LX Market fills the main street with vintage clothing, artisan food products, handmade goods, and street food stalls, typically drawing several thousand visitors between 10:00 and 18:00.
