Parque Verde do Mondego Riverside Walk

Parque Verde do Mondego is an urban riverside walkway running along the Mondego River in Coimbra, easily reached on foot from the city center or via local bus and bike-share stations along the banks; no parking permit or fee applies to the park itself. The route covers about 5 km one way on flat, paved and boardwalk surfaces with no meaningful elevation change, making it accessible for a wide range of visitors and a popular route for both walking and cycling. The path has intermittent tree shade and open riverside stretches, passing landmarks such as the Ponte de Santa Clara and Ponte Pedro e Inês bridges, the Choupal riverside forest at the western end, and views across the river toward the University of Coimbra's historic hilltop campus. Hikers can turn around at any bridge crossing to shorten the walk, with the Choupal forest area serving as a natural far-end destination for those completing the full one-way distance. Public drinking fountains and cafés are available at intervals along the route, and the flat, urban setting means shelter is never far away in case of sudden weather. Because the walkway sits at river level, it can occasionally flood after heavy rain, so conditions are worth checking during the wetter winter months.
