Aveiro Salt Pans Walking Route

The Aveiro Salt Pans Walking Route loops through the working salinas of the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, reached by bicycle or car from central Aveiro, with some areas also accessible by traditional moliceiro boat tours; no permit is required to walk the public paths around the salt pans. The loop covers about 4 km on flat, unshaded terrain, following packed-earth and gravel dikes between the shallow evaporation ponds, with no meaningful elevation change over the entire route. The open, low-lying landscape offers essentially no shade, and exposure to sun and wind is constant, so the flat terrain is easy underfoot but demanding in hot weather. Landmarks along the way include working salt pans where traditional hand-harvesting can sometimes be observed in summer, small wooden salt-worker shelters, and views of the colorful moliceiro boats moving through the surrounding canal network; the route can be shortened by turning back at any of the intersecting dike paths. There are no natural water sources along the salt pans themselves, though cafés near the route's starting point in Aveiro offer water and shelter. Because the ponds are shallow and reflective, midday sun can be intense, making early morning or late afternoon visits considerably more comfortable.
