Nazare

Nazare, 85 km southwest of Coimbra on the Leiria District coast, is reached in 1-1.25 hours by car via the A17/A8, while coach travel takes longer and typically requires a change at Leiria or Caldas da Rainha. The town is world famous for the giant winter waves at Praia do Norte, generated by an underwater canyon just offshore, which have drawn record-breaking big-wave surfers and made the beach a spectator destination from roughly October through March. A day visit usually starts by riding the funicular from the lower town up to Sitio, the clifftop neighborhood offering sweeping views over the main beach and the Nossa Senhora da Nazare sanctuary, before walking along the cliff-edge path toward the Praia do Norte lighthouse to watch or photograph the waves in winter. In summer, the focus shifts to the wide main beach itself, lined with brightly striped tents and traditional fishing boats, and to the seafood restaurants along Avenida da Republica serving grilled sardines and fresh-caught fish. The historic fishing character of the town, including women once known for wearing seven traditional skirts, still shows in the old quarter's narrow streets near the harbor. A typical loop covers Sitio, the lighthouse viewpoint, and lunch on the seafront before returning to Coimbra by early evening.
