Tomar and the Convento de Cristo

Tomar, 80 km southeast of Coimbra in Santarem District, is reached in about 1 hour by car via the A13/IC3, or roughly 1-1.5 hours by CP Regional train with a connection at Entroncamento. The town's centerpiece is the Convento de Cristo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in 1160 as the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal and later the Order of Christ, whose emblem still adorns Portuguese naval flags. The complex sits on a hilltop above the town, requiring a moderate uphill walk or a short taxi ride, and its centerpiece is the round Charola, a 12th-century Templar rotunda modeled on Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre, along with the famous Manueline west window encrusted with carved ropes, coral, and armillary spheres. A day itinerary starts with the hilltop convent in the morning, then descends into the old town to see the 15th-century synagogue, one of Portugal's best-preserved medieval Jewish sites, and to walk along the Nabao River, where a restored water wheel and riverside gardens offer a quiet lunch stop. Cafes around Praca da Republica serve regional dishes including the town's traditional fataca sponge cake. Spring is the most comfortable season for the uphill walk to the castle grounds, though the site is open and worthwhile year-round.
