Mistérios Negros Trail, Pico

The trail starts near the Mistério da Prainha on the EN3 outside São Roque do Pico, reached by car; there is no scheduled bus service to the trailhead and no permit is required. The loop covers 10 km with about 300 m of cumulative elevation gain, rated moderate, crossing the black lava fields, or mistérios, left by the eruptions of 1562 and 1718. The surface is almost entirely broken volcanic rock and packed lava gravel, often uneven underfoot, with essentially no shade across the open lava fields; exposure is low since the terrain is flat to gently rolling rather than cliff-edged, though the rough surface makes twisted ankles the main hazard. Landmarks along the route include the stone-walled currais, small rectangular enclosures built from loose lava rock that shelter grapevines from salt wind, remnants of traditional wine-making infrastructure, and views toward Montanha do Pico rising above the vineyard landscape, which forms part of Pico's UNESCO World Heritage-listed Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture. A shorter loop variant of about 6 km is possible by cutting back through the vineyard zone rather than continuing the full circuit around the lava field perimeter. There are no refuge huts or water sources on the trail, so hikers should carry all the water they need, and sun protection is essential given the total lack of shade. The black rock surface absorbs heat strongly on sunny days, making the trail noticeably warmer underfoot than the surrounding air temperature.
