Miradouro da Vista do Rei (Sete Cidades)

Perched on the southern rim of the Sete Cidades caldera at roughly 656 meters above sea level, the Miradouro da Vista do Rei is the single most photographed viewpoint in the Azores. From the terrace, visitors look directly down into the volcanic basin at the twin crater lakes, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, which sit side by side and take on distinct blue and green hues depending on light and algae content, despite being fed by the same watershed. The abandoned Monte Palace Hotel, a mid-century structure left to decay since the 1980s, stands just behind the main platform and has become a photo subject in its own right, though entry to the building itself is unofficial and not maintained for visitors. A short paved path runs along the rim connecting several viewing angles, with the classic postcard shot taken from the main terrace looking north over both lakes and the village of Sete Cidades on the caldera floor. Most visitors spend 30 to 45 minutes at the viewpoint itself, though many combine the stop with a drive down into the caldera to walk around Lagoa Azul at lake level. The site can fill with tour buses and rental cars by mid-morning, particularly in summer, and cloud frequently rolls into the caldera by early afternoon, obscuring the lakes entirely. Coming early, shortly after sunrise, offers the best chance of clear skies and the emptiest terrace for photographs.
