Scuba Diving the Dori Wreck, Faial

The Dori wreck dive, off Porto Pim near Horta on Faial Island in the Azores, visits a sunken cargo ship resting upright on the seabed at around 38 metres, now colonised by gorgonian sea fans and home to resident groupers and other reef fish that have adopted the hull as an artificial reef. This depth places the dive at the edge of recreational limits, so an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent, with experience diving beyond 30 metres, is generally required, along with awareness of the shorter no-decompression time available at this depth. Full scuba kit, including a 5-7mm wetsuit for the cooler deep water at the site, is available to rent from dive centres in Horta, though divers should bring their own certification card. Norberto Diver in Horta, the main operator running this dive, is a PADI-affiliated dive centre with instructors experienced in the site's depth profile and local conditions around Porto Pim. The pre-dive briefing covers the planned bottom time given the depth, buddy checks, and the ascent and safety-stop plan, along with the boat's contingency plan should a diver need to surface early. Because the wreck lies close to shore relative to other Faial dive sites, the boat trip itself is short, but sea conditions at the surface still need to be manageable for a safe entry and exit. The season runs May to October, when visibility and sea conditions are most favourable for a deep dive of this kind; winter's rougher seas and reduced visibility make the site less consistently diveable.
