Mercado de Lagos is a covered municipal market on Rua das Portas de Portugal, close to Lagos's old town walls and marina, serving the town's residents with everyday fresh food rather than tourist souvenirs. Ground-floor counters are organized by type — butchers and fishmongers along one side, fruit and vegetable stalls in the center, and cheese, bread and deli goods along the other — with vendors who are largely local producers rather than importers of mass-market goods, so the produce on offer is genuinely regional. Prices are fixed and shown per kilo or per unit; this is not a market where bargaining is customary, and visitors are expected to pay the marked price as locals do. Cash remains the dominant payment method at individual stalls, though the market's small on-site supermarket counter and some larger vendors accept cards; there is no tax-refund mechanism, since purchases are food rather than retail goods. The atmosphere is unhurried compared to the Algarve's larger halls, drawing mostly local shoppers and self-catering visitors stocking up for beach days rather than tour groups, and there are no dedicated food-court options inside, though the surrounding streets toward the marina have cafés for a coffee break. The stall layout is compact and easy to cover in one pass, with the must-visit corner being the cheese and cured-meat counters near the entrance, which stock Algarve specialties like queijo de cabra and presunto alongside the fish counters at the rear for the day's catch.
