The Ria Formosa Coastal Walk follows the lagoon shoreline of the Ria Formosa Natural Park for roughly 12km between Olhão and Faro, both served by train and local bus, with parking available near the Olhão municipal market and Faro's marina. No permit is needed to walk the public paths, though the route runs through a protected wetland where visitors are asked to stay on marked tracks. The terrain is entirely flat, following packed earth and gravel embankments beside salt pans, tidal mudflats and reed beds, with almost no shade for the full distance. Landmarks include the Olhão municipal fish market at the start, working salt pans still in seasonal use, wooden birdwatching platforms overlooking the tidal flats, and views across to the Ria Formosa's barrier islands before the path reaches Faro's old town and marina. Walkers can shorten the route by turning back at any of several access points along the way, as the path runs close to road access for most of its length. There are no huts or shelters, but both Olhão and Faro have cafés, water fountains and shops at each end.
